Every couple has that moment where they truly connect for the first time in their relationship and have that feeling that this could be the start of something meaningful and lasting. For most, or at least what the movies will lead you to believe, starts the first time you take each other’s hand or a memorable first kiss.
Ours happened to be a combination of both, attending the Kentucky Derby (a first for us both).
This was our first day trip away and our first date spending considerable time together. Being from St. Louis, Louisville is 260 miles away, 4 hours of drive time and 4 states traveled through, each way. This is no small feat, and road trips will test any budding relationship.
You have seen the photos and watched on the television this historic and iconic American event of big hats, majestic race horses and the “mint julep”, otherwise one big party with a few races in between! So we decided to attend the party and play the part! We placed our bets, enjoyed the fanfare and mingled with the locals in the infield (this is where the fun is had).
Whilst in the infield and right before the start of the big race, the storm clouds rolled in and we opted to run for cover. We locked hand as we ran for cover to take shelter under a large staircase and huddled together to keep from getting drenched. It was here that we locked eyes and leaned in and kissed each other for the first time. It was on this day that we knew there was something special. The storm blew past, the race began, and the horse that we bet on won the race!
Since that day, we have been on day trips, adventures here at home and abroad, held hands in moments of struggle, celebrated in moments of happiness, and we learn more every day about each other and how to love unconditionally.
We are excited to start the next chapter in our lives, and the story continue
